A World of Warcraft fighting game

Settle it one on one
with your own champions

A fighting game in your browser, built from the World of Warcraft install already on your computer. Drop the folder on the page and Thrall, Tyrande and Illidan step into the ring in their own gear, with nothing uploaded.

No account, no download, nothing leaves your machine.

Thrall faces a gnome warrior in Gurubashi Arena, health bars and action bars on screen, the word FIGHT across the middle

What a Mak'gora is

The Horde's oldest law, finally playable

A Mak'gora is a duel to the death: two fighters, one ring, nobody steps in until one of them falls. Cairne Bloodhoof fell in one to Garrosh Hellscream. Every player who has spammed /duel outside Orgrimmar has wanted a real one.

World of Warcraft duels end at one health and nobody remembers them. Fighting games have the stakes but not your champions. Mak'gora puts the game's own characters, gear and animations into a fighting game, rules and all.

Why it feels like the real thing

Every fighter, swing and stage comes from the game

  • Your install is the game

The fighters, their gear, their animations and the stages are read from the files on your computer. No download, no account, nothing uploaded.

  • The fight math is World of Warcraft's

Swing timers by weapon, every blow rolled on the hit table (miss, dodge, parry, block, crit), and damage ranges like a weapon's 70 to 131.

  • Every class can win

Hundreds of computer rounds, every class against every other, tuned the kits until each class wins between 46% and 54% of its rounds.

  • Fight a friend online

Find a fight in the lobby or challenge a player by name. Each of you plays from your own install, or share one keyboard.

Take their health to nothing and you have four seconds. Enter the sequence and finish the Mak'gora, or settle for a plain K.O.

How it works

From folder to first fight in three steps

  1. 1

    Open it in Chrome

Chrome on a Mac is what it is made for. Nothing to install.

  2. 2

Drop your World of Warcraft folder on the page

It is in Applications on a Mac. A folder with more than one game asks which world to fight in.

  3. 3

Choose your legend and the ground

Best of three rounds, sixty seconds each, against the computer or a friend.

The Choose your legend screen: Tyrande and Thrall full size on either side, the legends, your own champions and the races of Azeroth on the grid

Executions

Thirteen classes, thirteen ways to finish it

Each class has its own key sequence. Land it inside four seconds and the execution plays in slow motion, letterboxed, under DISHONOR.

Four frames of the warrior's Bladestorm execution: the key prompt under FINISH THE MAK'GORA, the charge, the spin and the execute

Legends

Fight as the heroes the game draws

Each legend wears the NPC's own gear, face and weapon, as far as your install has them. Add ?all to the address for every playable race and your own characters.

  • Tyrande Whisperwind

    High Priestess of Elune

  • Thrall

    Warchief of the Horde

  • Sylvanas Windrunner

    Banshee Queen

  • Malfurion Stormrage

    Archdruid

  • Illidan Stormrage

Stages

Real places, raised from your map files

The ground is read from the open install and built around the fighters while they wait on the VS screen.

  • Gurubashi Arena

    Stranglethorn Vale

    The Barrens

  • The Valley of Heroes

    Stormwind, classic installs

A fan game

Unofficial, free, and played on your own copy of the game

Mak'gora is a fan game made by two players. It is not made, endorsed or supported by Blizzard Entertainment. World of Warcraft, Warcraft, and their characters, places, art, sounds and music are Blizzard's. Here is what our code does, and what it leaves alone.

  • What our code is

A fighting engine, a 3D renderer and the screens around them, written by us from scratch and public on GitHub. The rules are modelled on how the game fights; the code holds no World of Warcraft files.

  • What it reads from your install

When you drop your folder, the page reads the models, textures, animations, gear, maps, sounds and music it needs from your files, in your browser. It only reads: nothing is uploaded, copied to a server or changed. Without your own install there is nothing to fight with.

  • What the site carries

Our code, our logo and icons, a fan-made Warcraft-style font, and a few screenshots and one video recorded from the game to show what it looks like: the portraits, stage previews and the reel on the front door. No game files: no models, textures, sounds or music.

  • What we stay away from

Money: no price, ads or purchases. Blizzard's logos, even the ones in your install. Your account and Blizzard's servers: no login, and nothing talks to Battle.net. The running game: the optional Mogshot addon only uses the game's addon interface to show a code you copy.

The fights borrow the shape Mortal Kombat made famous and none of NetherRealm's or Warner Bros.' art, sound, characters or code; we are not affiliated with them either. If you hold the rights to something on this site and want it changed or taken down, open an issue on GitHub and we will act on it.

FAQ

Before you drop your folder

Is it safe to drop my World of Warcraft folder on the page?

Yes. The page reads the files in your browser, on your machine. Nothing from the folder is uploaded, and the page cannot change or delete anything in it.

Do I need a Blizzard account or a subscription?

No login of any kind. You need World of Warcraft installed, because the fighters, their gear and the stages are read from those files.

Which computer and browser does it run on?

It is made for Chrome on a Mac. Other Chromium browsers usually work. Safari and Firefox may not read the folder.

Which versions of World of Warcraft work?

Retail (Midnight), WoW Forever and the classic clients. Each one is its own edition of the ring, with its own champions, stages and login screen. A folder that holds two games asks which one to fight in.

Can I fight a friend?

Yes. Play online opens a lobby where you can find a fight or challenge a player by name. Each of you plays from your own install. Two players can also share one keyboard, or plug in a gamepad.

Can I play my own characters?

Yes. Capture them in game with the Mogshot addon and add ?all to the address. That also opens every playable race.

What are the controls?

Player 1 moves with A D, jumps with W, attacks with J and casts with K L U. Player 2 uses the arrows with , . / and Right Shift. Hover any ability in the game for what it does.

Is it made by Blizzard?

No. It is an unofficial fan game, free, with no ads and no purchases, and not endorsed by Blizzard Entertainment. World of Warcraft and its characters belong to Blizzard. What our code does and what it leaves alone.

Privacy

Your World of Warcraft files are read in your browser and never sent anywhere. The game keeps your settings, your name for online play and a random player id in your browser's storage. Playing online sends your name, your moves and your install's version to the relay that pairs you with the other player. Report an Issue opens a filled GitHub issue in your own browser, which you can read and change before sending. There are no cookies and no ads. The site counts its own visits on that same relay: which page you opened, the site and country you came from, your browser and device, and whether you opened a folder or started a fight. It knows you only by a random id your browser keeps, never your address or name. The totals are on the stats page for anyone to see, and a browser set to Do Not Track is not counted.
