Battlegrounds, as imagined in 2004
2004 said
A Horde town and an Alliance town with quests and monsters between them. You win by razing the other side's base.
Forever says
The new battleground is Darkspear Islands, 15 against 15.
Nobody outside Blizzard had played a battleground when this chapter was written, so the guide describes the plan. Two towns, one for each faction. Quests and monsters in the land between. Victory when the enemy's base is razed "to the ground."
The battlegrounds that shipped were tidier than that, though the description reads a lot like an early idea of Alterac Valley. Forever adds a new one, Darkspear Islands, for teams of 15.
A battleground is a separate map where two teams of players fight over an objective. It's the organised kind of player against player combat.
